Flex -
the flex will be inspected for any damage, ensuring it is free from cuts, fraying or stress.
Plug - the plugtop will be opened to ensure that the flexible cable is secure in its anchorage and is correctly wired, that the fuse is of the correct rating for the appliance and it is free from any sign of overheating and in physically good condition.
The Appliance - the appliance will be inspected to ensure that it is in good working order, including ensuring that it switches on and off properly and the casing or cabinet has no damage that could result in access to live parts.

- Polarity Test (only carried out on extension cables and supply leads) - Earth Continuity Test (not carried out on Class II appliances that have no earth) - Insulation Resistance Test - Operational Test (if possible) - Earth Leakage Test (if Operational Test carried out) - Tests on computer equipment are "soft tests" of 200mA on earth continuity. No operational tests are carried out on computer CPUs.

A pass or failed label will be attached to every appliance, each having its own individual reference.

Documentation & Certification:
Although there is no requirement in the Electricity at Work Regulations to keep records of equipment and of inspections and tests, the HSE Memorandum of Guidance on these regulations advises that records of maintenance including tests should be kept throughout the working life of equipment.
The keeping of suitable records then is well advised. They provide evidence for the defence in the event of a prosecution; more practically, such records enable the close monitoring of the equipment highlighting potential faults or adverse trends. They are also essential in forming an accurate assessment of the necessary frequency of testing. For example, if over a number of consecutive test cycles few or no failures were recorded then the duty holder may consider reducing the frequency of tests, obviously the converse may also apply. On completion of the testing you will be issued with a safety certificate and a detailed report that provides information on each individual item.  All items that pass the inspection & testing will be labelled with a safety sticker and a unique number that helps us keep track of all portable appliances in your company.
